Introducing Art in Abstraction, Maryland Federation of Art

Introducing Art in Abstraction

There are a plethora of fascinating things in our world that artists can recreate representationally in their visual voices. However, there are also several ways to express these compelling things through abstraction. By utilizing concepts we are familiar with such as form, color, composition, and so much more, artists can evoke a range of ideas and emotions as abstract art. MFA (Maryland Federation of Art) invites all artists to enter an exhibition that welcomes 2D and 3D abstract work for Maryland Hall’s Earl and Martino Galleries. This exhibition is open to artists residing in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. All eligible fine art entries in any media will be considered by the juror. Selected works will be displayed in this MFA-organized exhibition at Maryland Hall’s Earl and Martino Galleries in Annapolis, MD from July 8 – August 14. Juror: Tesia Blackburn: Artist, analog and digital, author and teacher

Tesia was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and attended elementary school in Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. She went on to attend high school in New Mexico before moving to San Francisco. With over 30 years of experience as a working artist, Tesia has had a diverse and successful career. In 2002, NextMonet Inc. signed her to produce prints of several of her paintings. In 2000, she was hired by Golden Artist Colors as the Golden Working Artist in San Francisco. In 2014, her first book, Acrylic Painting with Passion, was published by Northlight Books. Her work is collected both locally and internationally, with patrons as far away as Tokyo. In 2018, her next two books were published and are available on Amazon and through other booksellers. Tesia received her BFA from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, studied lithography at the San Francisco Art Institute, and earned a Master of Arts degree from John F. Human Expressions- Maryland Federation of Art

Introducing Human Expressions Re-inventing the Portrait through Color, Form, and Composition The portrait has long been a powerful medium through which artists explore identity, emotion, and the essence of the human condition. Human Expressions invites artists to reimagine and push the boundaries of this traditional genre, encouraging the exploration of new ways to convey the complexities of human experience. This exhibition seeks works that capture the depth of human expression through innovative approaches to portraiture, focusing on the transformative use of color, form, and composition. We are looking for artists who are eager to break away from conventional representations of the human figure and create bold, evocative portraits that explore psychological, emotional, and conceptual facets of human identity. Whether through abstracted forms, unconventional color palettes, dynamic compositions, or mixed media, we encourage the use of any technique that can convey the intricacies of human expression in a compelling way. Any original 2D or 3D work that follows our exhibition guidelines will be considered. This includes works selected by the juror which will be exhibited in Maryland Federation of Art’s (MFA) first Human Expressions Exhibition through our Virtual Gallery from April 15 – May 31, 2025.

6th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition

The competition is open to photographers of all types, inviting entries in one of three categories: monochrome (black and white), color, and experimental. In 2020, we have modified the parameters of the experimental category, which will now focus on photography as sculpture. Our goal is to attract non-traditional photography using a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts and subjects which challenge traditional boundaries of photography and expand the view of photography beyond two-dimensional art.

Join us for a series of workshops, learning opportunities and social events which celebrate this important nod to the art scene in Western Maryland. The Call

Entries are currently being accepted and may be submitted via https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=6751. No entries sent directly to the Allegany Arts Council will be accepted. If an artist has not previously participated in a call through CAFÉ, it will be necessary to create an account prior to application.

Entries are $30.00 for up to two (entries) with a maximum of six (6) entries per photographer. The deadline to enter is February 10, 2020.
